The Best of Auvergne
Auvergne is a countryside paradise, from its iconic volcanoes and charming villages to the natural quality of its water. With delicious local products, exciting festivals and plenty of outdoor activities, this is truly a diverse region.
VOLCANOES: FORCES OF NATURE
Volcanoes are everything in Auvergne, with mountains, lakes formed in craters, perched towns such as Le Puy-en-Velay and landscapes made up of basalt columns. The mountain chain of Les Puys and the viewpoints comprising Le Puy de Dôme, Le Plomb du Cantal (Europe’s largest volcano) and Le Puy Mary offer fantastic and easy walking among rare plants and animals along its wild rivers. Vulcania, meanwhile, is a quite unique location, part amusement park and part exploration site, providing an opportunity to find out about the force and mysteries of the earth’s very core.
A FESTIVAL OF CULTURE
The Auvergne has one of the largest collections of Romanesque art in Europe, with more than 250 buildings. It’s also a land of castles, villages, spa towns (Vichy), and religious towns (Le Puy-en-Velay, with a UNESCO world heritage listed cathedral). Here in the Auvergne, we also offer a lively cultural scene: from the International Street Festival in Aurillac to the Short Film Festival in Clermont-Ferrand; from the Sacred Music Festival in La Chaise-Dieu to the pop-rock concerts of Europavox in Clermont-Ferrand (voted the French rock capital by Inrockuptibles magazine); there’s something for everyone!
COUNTRYSIDE: A BOUNDLESS PLAYGROUND
With its rounded volcanoes and wild rivers, Auvergne means easy walks, peaceful hikes, dynamic courses, mountain biking trails, river rafting, paragliding, delta winging and various other outdoor pursuits. From river fishing to hot air ballooning, this really is a boundless playground. Breathe in, walk, play, swim, fly and be reinvigorated! Get away from the crowds and back to nature!
FLAVOURS AND INDIVIDUALITY
With 5 AOP-protected cheeses (which make up 26% of French cheeses), famous cold meats and other local produce with appellation status, such as green Puy lentils and golden Saint Flour lentils, it’s no surprise that Auvergne is an exciting place for chefs! With Michelin stars (no fewer than 3 for Regis Marcon), and other awards such as Bibs gourmands, Auberges de pays, Toques d’Auvergne, diversity, respect for natural ingredients and conviviality are what make eating in Auvergne such a rewarding experience.
Auvergne is easily accessible, centrally located and yet offers a preserved environment. Here, we have family-oriented accommodation, activities and restaurants, without breaking the bank. The vast landscapes of the Auvergne are easily accessible - a safe playground and learning environment for children. In addition to outdoor activities, families can take advantage of our theme parks (Vulcania, Le PAL) and our shows and festivals (Aurillac Street Theatre Festival, Cervolix on the Gergovie plateau, one of the largest kite shows in France.
WATER: WELLBEING AND THERMAL HERITAGE
Water flows out from 109 mineral water springs in Auvergne. Here, the beneficial, curative, purifying and reinvigorating powers of water are exemplified by Volvic, Vichy, Châteldon, Arvie, Mont-Dore and others. Water cures come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes here, with wellbeing, spas, hammams, thermoludism and more, with something for everyone, making Auvergne France’s second-biggest thermal region, overflowing with invigorating waterfalls and refreshing walks, all within a healthy and reassuring environment!
